1. Who we are
The Folio Studios ("we," "us," "our") is a full-service self-publishing agency helping authors take a book from manuscript to published, marketed, and sold. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect through thefoliostudios.com and our client services, how we use it, and the choices and rights you have.
We are based in the United States, registered in the State of Colorado, and serve clients globally.
Contact for privacy questions or to exercise your rights: inquiry@foliostudios.com
2. Information we collect
Information you give us directly, when you book a strategy call, submit an inquiry form, sign a proposal, or work with us as a client:
- Name, email address, and phone number
- Details about your book project (manuscript content, outlines, notes, interview recordings or transcripts, publishing goals, and similar material you share with us to complete your project)
- Billing and payment details (processed through our payment processor, see below, we do not store full card numbers ourselves)
- Any other information you choose to include in messages to us
Information collected automatically, when you visit our website:
- IP address, browser type, device type, and general location (city/region level)
- Pages visited, time spent on the site, and referring pages, collected through Google Analytics
- Cookies and similar technologies used for analytics (see Section 5)
Information from third-party tools we use to run our business:
- Our CRM/email platform stores contact information and email engagement data for clients and subscribers
- Our payment processor holds transaction and billing information needed to process payments
3. How we use your information
We use the information above to:
- Scope, deliver, and manage your book project (writing, editing, cover design, publishing, marketing, or website services)
- Process payments and send invoices or receipts
- Communicate with you about your project, respond to inquiries, and provide customer support
- Send project updates and, if you've opted in, marketing emails about our services (you can unsubscribe at any time)
- Understand how visitors use our website so we can improve it
- Meet legal, tax, and accounting obligations
- Protect against fraud, misuse, or security issues
We do not use your manuscript, book content, or personal story for any purpose beyond completing the services you've engaged us for, and we do not sell or share it with unrelated third parties.
4. Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information for money.
We share information with:
- Service providers who help us operate: our website analytics provider (Google Analytics), payment processor, and CRM/email platform, each of which processes data on our behalf under their own privacy and security terms
- Advertising partners: we use the Meta Pixel and a Google Ads remarketing tag on our website, which share certain website activity and identifiers (such as a hashed email or device identifier) with Meta and Google so we can show relevant ads to past visitors and measure ad performance. Under some state privacy laws (including California's), this counts as "sharing" your information for cross-context behavioral advertising, even though we don't receive payment for it. See Section 7 for how to opt out.
- Our in-house team members working on your project: editors, ghostwriters, cover designers, and other production staff who need access to your manuscript or project details to do their work. Everyone on our team is bound by confidentiality regarding client material.
- Legal or regulatory authorities, if required by law, subpoena, or to protect our rights, safety, or property
5. Cookies and tracking technologies
We use the following categories of cookies and similar technologies:
- Analytics cookies (Google Analytics): help us understand how visitors use our site, pages viewed, time on site, general traffic patterns.
- Advertising cookies (Meta Pixel, Google Ads remarketing tag): let us show ads to people who've visited our site on Meta platforms and Google's ad network, and measure how well those ads perform.
You can control cookies through your browser settings, including blocking or deleting them, though this may affect how parts of the site function and how ads are shown to you.
6. Data retention
We keep client project information for 5 years after your project is completed, after which it's deleted or anonymized unless we're required to keep it longer for legal, tax, or accounting reasons. Website analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics' default retention settings unless we configure otherwise. Advertising cookie data is retained according to Meta's and Google's own retention policies for the Pixel and remarketing tag, which we don't directly control.
7. Your privacy rights
If you are a California resident (or a resident of another US state with a comprehensive privacy law), you generally have the right to:
- Know what personal information we've collected about you
- Request a copy of that information
- Request that we correct inaccurate information
- Request that we delete your information (subject to exceptions, such as information we're required to keep for legal or accounting reasons)
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of your information. Because we use the Meta Pixel and Google Ads remarketing tag (Section 4), you can opt out of this sharing by enabling Global Privacy Control in your browser, which we honor automatically
- Not be discriminated against for exercising any of these rights
If you are located in the European Union, United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with similar protections, you generally have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or port your data, and to object to certain processing, including objecting to advertising cookies via the cookie consent banner. Our legal basis for processing your information is generally your consent (for marketing communications and advertising cookies), the performance of our contract with you (for client project work), or our legitimate business interests (for website analytics and security).
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at inquiry@foliostudios.com. We'll respond within the timeframe required by applicable law.
8. Data security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect your information, including relying on reputable third-party providers (payment processor, CRM, analytics) who maintain their own security standards. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security.
9. International data transfers
Because we're based in the United States and serve clients worldwide, information you provide may be transferred to and processed in the United States, where privacy laws may differ from those in your country.
10. Children's privacy
Our services are intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16, and if we learn we've done so, we'll delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We'll post the revised version here with an updated "Last updated" date. Material changes will be communicated in a way that's reasonably likely to reach you, such as an email or a notice on our website.
12. Contact us
